Jags look to expand the TE’s role in offense

Mercedes Lewis is the #1 draft pick of the Jaguars this season.  He is a good receiver that has the speed to stretch the field.  Lewis is profiled in The Draft Report on this site.

Kyle Brady is a good run blocker, almost like having a second tackle on his side of the field.  He isn’t very fast nor gifted as a receiver.  Brady has played in 167 games (152 starts) and has caught 329 passes for 3,412 yards (10.4 avg) and 23 TDs.

George Wrighster is a decent back-up TE, but nothing special.  He also isn’t very fast.  Wrighster has played in 35 games (10 starts) and has caught 36 passes for 339 yards (9.4 avg) and 5 TDs.

With Jimmy Smith retired, someone has to step up

Matt Jones could be the guy that steps up.  He showed amazing hands last season, but he’s still a little raw as he was a QB in college.  He played in 16 games (1 start) and caught 36 passes for 432 yards (12.0 avg) with 5 TDs.  Jones also rushed the ball twelve times for 51 yards (4.3 ypc), and completed 2 out of 3 passes for 12 yards.

Reggie Williams was a first round pick two years ago and has been a huge disappointment for the Jaguars.  He has the skill, but not the drive.  Williams has played in 32 games (22 starts) and has caught 62 passes for 713 yards (11.5 avg) and a TD.

Ernest Wilford excelled the second half of last season and could easily unseat Williams as a starter.  Wilford has the speed to get deep and he has a pretty good set of hands.  Wilford has played in 31 games (11 starts) and has caught 60 passes for 952 yards (15.9 avg) and 9 TDs.

Troy Edwards is back for another tour of duty with the Jags.  Edwards at best is a #3 wide-out.  Edwards has played in 92 games (22 starts) and has caught 203 passes for 2,404 yards (11.8 avg) and 11 TDs.  He also has rushed 16 times for 46 yards (2.9 ypc) and a TD.

Cortez Hankton probably will be a non-factor because he isn’t very fast, and slow receivers have a hard time in the NFL.  He has played in 34 games (no starts) and has caught 29 passes for 262 yards (9.0 avg) and two TDs.

Randy Hymes could make the team and contribute.  He is a tall receiver that is good in the red zone.  He has played in 37 games (12 starts) and has caught 43 passes for 578 yards (13.4 avg) and 4 TDs.

The Jaguars always defend their turf against the Pittsburgh Steelers.  The Jags have covered eight of the last nine meetings in Jacksonville against Pittsburgh.  The Steelers have lost alot of good players and the QB could be a little rusty or have a headache.

The Jaguars win outright.

Scobee has a strong leg but……

Scobee is not very accurate.  Scobee has only made 13 of 23 field goals of 40+ yards since he came into the league two years ago.  Coach Del Rio always has his fingers crossed when he sends Scobee out to kick.

Scobee has connected on 77.0% of his field goals and has averaged 6.25 points per game.

Fred Taylor, key to season

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page by ravenhater on Tuesday 1 August 2006 at 2:57 pm

“Fragile” Fred Taylor is the key to the season.  Taylor may be brittle, but he’s a impact performer that makes the whole team better when he plays.  Taylor has run for over 1,200 yards five times in his career, and he’s clearly the best running back on the Jaguars.  Taylor has played in 97 games (93 starts) and has rushed for 8,367 yards (4.6 ypc) and 51 TDs.  He also has caught 238 passes for 1,963 yards and seven TDs.

Greg Jones is a big strong running back that makes his living between the tackles.  Jones is a little slow, but plenty strong and would rather run over you than around you anyways.  Jones has played in 30 games (16 starts) and has rushed for 737 yards (3.5 ypc) with 7 TDs.  He has only caught 13 passes for 78 yards.

Maurice Drew was the second round pick in this years’ draft for the Jags.  Drew is a small guy (5’6″, 205) but he’s hard to tackle with the low center of gravity he runs with.  Drew projects to be more of a third-down back/kick-returner type player, but only time will tell.  Drew played in 36 games at UCLA (22 starts) and rushed for 2,503 yards (5.2 ypc) and 26 TDs.  He also caught 64 passes for 819 yards with 7 TDs.

Alvin Pearman played in all 16 games for the Jags, but didn’t start any.  The drafting of Drew is probably bad news for Pearman.  Pearman rushed for 149 yards (3.8 ypc) and a TD.  He also caught 32 passes for 240 yards.

LeBrandon Toefield has gotten some playing time but hasn’t done a whole lot with it.  Toefield has played in 39 games (2 starts) and rushed for 523 yards (3.7 ypc) and six TDs.  He also has caught 45 passes for 273 yards and 2 TDs.

Someone needs to step up as Taylor’s back-up this season, but if his back-up plays alot the Jags might have a hard time returning to the playoffs this season.
