2. (39) Eben Britton

The Jaguars didn’t stop drafting offensive tackles in the first round as they selected 6′6″, 310 pound Eben Britton in the 2nd round.  Britton will likely push for the starting offensive tackle job opposite Eugene Monroe this season.  He is a nasty run blocker who has some problems with speed rushers which is something he can work on.  Britton played in 37 games (all starts) in his three seasons with the Arizona Wildcats.  This was a good move for the Jags who continue to rebuild in the trenches.

1. (8) Eugene Monroe, OT

The Jaguars pulled a surprise by selecting OT Eugene Monroe in the first round with WR Michael Crabtree still on the board.  But, offensive tackle was a huge need for the Jags and Monroe should start right away.  Monroe is a big guy at 6′5″, 310 pounds but he tends to be a finesse player.  That won’t cut it in Jacksonville where they love to run the football.  Monroe played 4 seasons with the Virginia Cavaliers playing in 47 games (29 starts).  This was a good pick for the Jags as Monroe should help solidify the O-Line for a long, long time.

The Jacksonville Jaguars sign WR Torry Holt

The Jaguars have signed 32-year old WR Torry Holt to a 3-year, $20 million dollar contract.  He instantly becomes the Jags’ best WR since Jimmy Smith retired in 2006.  Holt played in all 16 games for the Rams last season and he caught 64 passes for 796 yards (12.4 avg) with 3 TD grabs.  He has now played in 158 games in his 10-year NFL career and he has caught 869 passes for 12,660 yards (14.6 avg) with 74 TD grabs.  He has also carried the ball 11 times for 57 yards (5.2 ypc) in his NFL career.  Holt still has some football left and he will likely be David Garrard’s favorite target in 2009.

TE George Wrighster is released by the Jacksonville Jaguars

The Jaguars have released 28-year old veteran TE George Wrighster.  He played in 5 games for the Jaguars last season in which he caught 2 passes for 35 yards (17.5 avg).  Wrighster has played in 67 games in his NFL career to date and he has caught 94 passes for 850 yards (9.0 avg) with 9 TD grabs.  The Jaguars shouldn’t miss Wrighster too much next season or down the road.
