The Jacksonville Jaguars have some things to sort out at QB for 2011

It seems like head coach Jack Del Rio is never content to have 32-year old David Garrard as his starting QB.  That is a shame because he is still a decent QB and he proved it last season.  Garrard played in 14 games for the Jaguars last season and he completed 236 of 366 passes (64.5%) for 2,734 yards with 23 TD passes and 15 INTs (90.8 QB Rating).  He also carried the ball 66 times for 279 yards (4.2 ypc) with 5 TD runs last season.  Garrard has now played in 86 games in his 9 years with the Jaguars and he has completed 1,406 of 2,281 passes (61.6%) for 16,033 yards with 89 TD passes and only 54 INTs (85.8 QB Rating).  Garrard has also carried the ball 380 times for 1,746 yards (4.6 ypc) with 17 TD runs in his NFL career.

27-year old  Trent Edwards was claimed off waivers early last season from Buffalo and he was awful.  Edwards played in 4 games for the Bills & Jags last season in which he completed 55 of 101 passes (54.9%) for 521 yards with 2 TD passes and 5 INTs (54.9 QB Rating).  He also carried the ball 14 times for 58 yards (4.1 ypc) last season.  Edwards has now played in 36 games in his NFL career and he has completed 561 of 927 passes (60.5%) for 6,019 yards with 26 TD passes and 30 INTs (75.4 QB Rating).  Edwards has also carried the ball 78 times for 330 yards (4.2 ypc) with 3 TD runs in his NFL career.

38-year old Todd Bouman even got a start for the Jags last season due to all of the injuries they suffered at QB.  Bouman completed 18 of 34 passes (52.9%) for 222 yards with 2 TD passes and 2 INTs (68.5 QB Rating) last season.  He also carried the ball 2 times for 8 yards (4.0 ypc) for the Jags.  Bouman has now played in 44 games in his NFL career and he has completed 147 of 264 passes (55.7%) for 1,905 yards with 13 TD passes and 13 INTs (74.4 QB Rating).  He has also carried the ball 23 times for 94 yards (4.1 ypc) in his NFL career.

29-year old Luke McCown didn’t last long before he got injured and missed the rest of the year.  McCown played in 1 game for the Jaguars last season and he completed 11 of 19 passes (57.9%) for 120 yards with 0 TD passes and 0 INTs (76.6 QB Rating).  He also carried the ball 1 time for 4 yards last season.  McCown has now played in 16 games in his NFL career and he has completed 154 of 260 passes (59.2%) for 1,739 yards with 9 TD passes and 10 INTs (74.8 QB Rating).  McCown has also carried the ball 22 times for 161 yards (7.3 ypc) in his career to date.

VERDICT:  I see David Garrard being the starting QB for the Jaguars in 2011.  I don’t see Trent Edwards or Todd Bouman coming back in 2011.  I think the Jags might re-sign Luke McCown if he’s healthy but they should still consider drafting a young QB in the middle rounds of the NFL Draft next April.

Trent Edwards and the Jags’ defense conspired to kill them yesterday.  Trent Edwards looked awful as he completed 12 of 25 passes for 140 yards with 1 TD pass and 1 INT.  He also carried the ball 4 times for 18 yards (4.5 ypc) in this game.  Rashad Jennings rushed for 108 yards on 22 carries (4.9 ypc) with 1 TD carry and he also caught 4 passes for 34 yards (8.5 avg).  Deji Karim pitched in with 52 yards rushing on 7 carries (7.4 ypc).  WR Jason Hill (3 rec, 68 yards) and TE Marcedes Lewis (4 rec, 26 yards, TD) led the way for the Jags in the passing game yesterday.  The Jaguars finished up with 198 yards rushing on 35 carries (5.7 ypc) and they also completed 12 of 25 passes for 124 yards.

The defense was absolutely pathetic for the Jags yesterday.  LB Kirk Morrison (13 tackles), safety Courtney Greene (9 tackles), CB Don Carey (8 tackles, 1 tackle for a loss) and DE Jeremy Mincey (8 tackles, 2 tackles for a loss) led the way for the Jags on D in this game.  The Texans finished up with 244 yards rushing on 37 carries (6.6 ypc) and they also completed 18 of 22 passes for 253 yards.  The Jaguars finished up in second place in the AFC South with a 8-8 record.
