Here is how I ranked the Jacksonville Jaguars’ QBs since they came into the NFL

I decided to go back and rank every QB that has started at least 1 game for the Jacksonville Jaguars since they have entered the NFL.  This was a very top heavy list and here’s how I see it:

 1. Mark Brunell – Lefty throwing Mark Brunell was a great QB for the Jaguars.  He could beat you with either his arm or legs.  The Jaguars were 63-54 (53.8%) when Brunell started at QB.  He played in 120 games (117 starts) for the Jaguars and he completed 2,184 of 3,616 (60.4%) passes for 25,698 yards with 144 TD passes and 86 INTs (85.4 QB Rating).  Brunell also carried the ball 429 times for 2,219 yards (5.2 ypc) with 14 TD runs for the Jags.  Brunell made it to three Pro Bowls as the QB of the Jaguars.  He quite simply is…the best QB the Jags have ever had.

 2. David Garrard – For some reason, David Garrard always seems to be on the hot seat.  The Jaguars are 39-37 (51.3%) when Garrard starts at QB for them.  He has played in 86 games (76 starts) in his career with the Jaguars and he has completed 1,406 of 2,281 passes (61.6%) for 16,003 yards with 89 TD passes and 54 INTs (80.5 QB Rating).  Garrard has also carried the ball 380 times for 1,746 yards (4.6 ypc) with 17 TD runs in his career with Jacksonville.  Garrard’s time in Jacksonville is likely coming near a close due to the pick of Blaine Gabbert in last April’s NFL Draft.  Garrard has made it to one Pro Bowl with the Jags.

 3. Byron Leftwich – The Jaguars were 24-20 (54.5%) when Byron Leftwich started at QB.  Leftwich just never seemed to be able to stay healthy as David Garrard eventually pushed him out the door in Jacksonville.  Leftwich played in 46 games (44 starts) for the Jaguars and he completed 789 for 1,344 passes (58.7%) for 9,042 yards with 51 TD passes and 36 INTs (80.5 QB Rating).  Leftwich also carried the ball 120 times for 364 yards (3.0 ypc) with 8 TD runs for the Jaguars.

 4. Quinn Gray – Quinn Gray had to be the best #3 QB in the NFL when he was in Jacksonville.  The Jaguars were 2-2 (50%) when Gray started at QB.  Gray played in 11 games (4 starts) for the Jaguars and he completed 101 of 180 passes (56.1%) for 1,252 yards with 12 TD passes and 5 INTs (88.5 QB Rating).  Gray also carried the ball 24 times for 84 yards (3.5 ypc) with 2 TD runs for the Jaguars.

 5. Jamie Martin – Jamie Martin was a solid backup QB for the Jaguars.  The Jaguars lost his only start though.  Martin played in 9 games (1 start) for the Jaguars and he completed 49 of 78 passes (62.8%) for 662 yards with 4 TD passes and 1 INT (101.5 QB Rating).  Martin also carried the ball 12 times for 2 yards (0.2 ypc) for the Jags.

 6. Rob Johnson – Rob Johnson was an exciting player for the Jags when he got a shot to get on the field.  The Jaguars won Johnson’s only start for them.  Johnson played in 8 games (1 start) for the Jaguars and he completed 25 of 35 passes (71.4%) for 368 yards with 2 TD passes and 3 INTs (88.8 QB Rating).  Johnson also carried the ball 13 times for 51 yards (3.9 ypc) with 1 TD run for the Jaguars.

 7. Jay Fiedler – Jay Fiedler played well for the Jags when given a chance.  The Jaguars won Fiedler’s only start.  Fiedler played in 8 games (1 start) for the Jaguars and he completed 61 of 94 passes (64.9%) for 656 yards with 2 TD passes and 2 INTs (82.0 QB Rating).  Fiedler also carried the ball 13 times for 26 yards (2.0 ypc) for the Jaguars.

 8. Steve Matthews – Steve Matthews was yet another solid backup for the Jaguars.  The Jags won Matthews’ only start for them.  He played in 2 games (1 start) for the Jaguars and he completed 26 of 40 passes (65%) for 275 yards with 0 TD passes and 0 INTs (84.9 QB Rating).  Matthews also carried the ball 1 time for 10 yards for the Jags.

 9. Steve Beuerlein – Steve Beuerlein had much better careers than a lot of the guys ranked ahead of him on this list, but he didn’t outplay any of them as a Jacksonville Jaguar.  Beuerlein played in 7 games (6 starts) for the Jaguars and he completed 71 of 142 passes (50%) for 952 yards with 4 TD passes and 7 INTs (60.5 QB Rating).  He also carried the ball 5 times for 32 yards (6.4 ypc) for the Jags.

10. Jonathan Quinn – Jonathan Quinn was a so-so QB at best for the Jaguars.  Quinn was 1-2 (33.3%) as the starting QB for the Jaguars.  Quinn played in 11 games (3 starts) for the Jaguars and he completed 66 of 125 passes (52.8%) for 748 yards with 3 TD passes and 4 INTs (65.7 QB Rating).  Quinn also carried the ball 21 times for 117 yards (5.6 ypc) with 1 TD run for the Jaguars.

11. Todd Bouman – The Jaguars gave a desperation call to Todd Bouman, who was pretty much retired, last year and he filled in as the #3 QB.  The Jaguars lost Bouman’s only start last year.  Bouman played in 1 game (1 start) for the Jaguars and he completed 18 of 34 passes (52.9%) for 222 yards with 2 TD passes and 2 INTs (68.5 QB Rating).  Bouman also carried the ball 2 times for 8 yards (4.0 ypc) for the Jaguars.

12. Trent Edwards – Trent Edwards was claimed off waivers from the Bills last year and he was awful.  The Jaguars lost Edwards’ only start last year.  He played in 3 games (1 start) for the Jaguars and he completed 26 of 49 passes (53.1%) for 280 yards with 1 TD pass and 3 INTs (51.4 QB Rating).  Edwards also carried the ball 9 times for 34 yards (3.8 ypc) for the Jaguars.

So there you have it, that’s how I have seen the QBs of the Jaguars through time.

The Jaguars had a very interesting draft

Anyone who saw the Jaguars play last season knows that they needed help on D way more than on offense.  That didn’t stop the Jaguars from trading up six spots in the first round (they gave up a second round pick) to select QB Blaine Gabbert.  The whole draft hinges on Gabbert’s future.  He could bump David Garrard out of a job at some point in 2011.  He will be the franchise QB the Jaguars have been looking for.  OG Will Rackley and WR Cecil Shorts III were also added to help spark the offense.  With the last two picks, the Jags finally addressed some needs on D when they took safety Chris Prosinski and CB Rod Isaac.
